13 Wishes for 13 Witches
A Sculpture Installation by Debra Koppman
Dec 13, 2007 through Jan 27, 2008
This piece, consisting of 13 standing “wands,” was started in a class I taught many years ago at JFK University. The class, entitled Women, Art, and Magic was a combined studio/theory seminar with a basis in spiritual traditions. I had taught this same seminar several times, but with this particular group of women was especially successful. Since a crucial theme of the class related to the idea of women needing to regain lost power, I wanted to give each of the participants a magic wand, just in case. I made 9 red wands for 9 students, with the idea of gifting them at our last class session. As it turned out, I did gift them, but with some reluctance to let them go. As a group together, they became something more interesting to me than they had been as individuals, and almost immediately I started building more wands. The intention was to create some kind of a wand-gathering, for the purpose of gathering power and energy for whoever might need it. The wands stayed in my closet, half finished for a long time, as other projects were given higher priority. Recently, though, it seemed like a good time to reactivate their potential. The 1870 Gallery seemed like an ideal place to bring them together.
