Abstraction and Perception

Paintings and Drawings by Karl Jensen

The charcoal drawings, acrylic paintings, and ink drawings of this exhibition represent 3 approaches to his work—all related, but distinctly different—explains Karl L. Jensen, who will be showing in a solo exhibition at Belmont’s 1870 Art Center Gallery from August 10th through September 24th. Mr. Jensen’s well composed and sensitive charcoal drawings are of real subjects and although representational, he works with an eye toward emphasizing abstract elements in the renderings. His acrylic paintings sometimes use invented subjects but more often rely on previous realistic drawings as a point of departure. The paintings move still further into the realm of abstract and, with his use of color, take on an expressionistic or surreal quality.

Waiting for You

Jensen’s pen and ink drawings, on the other hand, often have no literal image as a starting point, therefore artwork conclusions evolve over time, i.e., during the process. He feels this approach tends toward “the abstract or the unidentifiable, usually with vague metaphors for landscape spaces.”

In this exhibition, Mr. Jensen explores the continuum between “literal” and “abstract” imagery to support his contention that it’s not “either-or” but “and” (to varying degrees).

Karl L. Jensen’s considerable skill as an artist has led to dozens of exhibitions in California, where he has been teaching art for the past 25 years. He now serves on the faculty of
the Academy of Art University, CA.
