Abstracts and Images

My present work has two distinct sides, one being facial imagery of family members and the other being abstracts. There is a time for all of us when we are at the top of our game. We have innocence in our faces and we are so hopeful for the future and what life will bring us. With this thought in mind I have taken my parents and my own high school graduation pictures and worked them over and over into numerous images giving them minor celebrity status, so to speak. My parents are hard working people and I decided one day that I wanted the world to see them and know them and to celebrate their lives. I believe I have succeeded in what I set out to do.

My abstracts are created in a totally different manner. I create a design from a feeling or emotion, or am inspired by an object of nature whose shape intrigues me. A lot of my designs are topographical in nature. I start with a very small design and imagine the colors I could use in creating a larger, more complex design. Color is where the excitement begins. Before I prepare the larger design I start with my color pallet of fabrics, laying one against the other, looking for new and interesting combinations. I usually start in the center of the design and work to the edges. When the combinations start to feel comfortable and my intuition tells me I am right an excitement starts growing within me. I then know I am on the right track and oh what a joyous feeling that is. I try to use the fewest possible components of colors to make the strongest possible gutsy statement. I want the viewer to take a second look, a profound look at my work and know that life exists in my art. I want that color to be in their face so much that they can’t resist stopping whether they like my work or not. To finish the work I use sewing machine stitches applied in repetitious movement. This physical detailing enables me to find a very satisfying organic rhythm with my art. Life is about creating art!
