Passing Strange

GALLERY EXHIBITION and OPEN STUDIOS - SPRING 2006

Under the enigmatic theme of PASSING STRANGE, the 27 artists of 1870 Art Center have slipped their tethers, sprung their sprockets or otherwise taken leave of their senses in an effort to present works that are so for out of the ordinary as to be passing strange. Ruth Waters’ entry, under the working title of The Furry Beast invites a pat on it’s soft, furry back but, wait, it is also somehow menacing—given it’s size of 28 x 13 inches. This artist invites visitors to the exhibit to participate in the naming of her disquieting creature…perhaps from a distance. Paper and pencil will be provided.

The self-involved fantasy character in Fred Holle’s Introspection, draws one in, engaging the viewer as a personal witness to an uncomfortable preoccupation. Holle’s wit and humor is evident in his observation that "at this time in history, the Passing Strange is becoming a common and static condition."

Other works like Bill Pound’s erie photograph titled, Dream World, Susan Trubow’s finely rendered drawing of a seal’s skull titled, Nestled, and Kevyn Warnock’s mysterious landscape titled, Night’s Edge, which blends abstract and representational styles, are just a few of the very unusual artworks presented in this exhibition.
