Robert Wilkinson is a sculptor working primarily in hardwoods which he uses to develop abstract forms. He has chosen wood as a medium because of its ability to convey tonal warmth and tactile pleasure. His designs generally utilize broad planes rather than detail; they include figurative and life forms from nature. Movement and tension are an inherent quality in much of his work. He also produces sculpture in the form of constructions, utilizing various woods and occasionally with copper or other materials. Hand tools are used to carve and finish his art. Some designs are directly transferred from a mental image to the wood or from an idea worked out in a maquette. Other pieces evolve during the carving, ultimately influenced by unique characteristics encountered in the medium. The creative process is often unpredictable and results in work, the designs of which, differ in ways unforeseen in the original concept. Wilkinson began sculpting during the last years of his career and prior to his retirement from social work in the mid 1980's. |
