I'm a figural artist of "Romantic" persuasion. I'm also a draughtsman-painter in that drawing is the genesis of all of my work, much the same as it was in the work of William Blake, Toulouse-Lautrec and Egon Schiele. I constantly draw from models, partly for the great pleasure it affords but, primarily, to maintain perceptual sensitivity and to obtain fresh data to fill a reservoir of images that may be tapped, when needed, for the paintings. I want to stress, however, that the use of this stored information is strictly a sub-conscious act as regards the works from my imagination.
My primary vehicle of expression over the years has been an on-going series titled "GNOMEGAME". It's guiding CONCEPT relates to the revelation and personification of universal human attitudes ranging from satire to fantasy. My awareness of the particular "attitude" being manifested on the picture plane usually crystallizes as the painting unfolds. That is, I don't preconceive. Perhaps this approach is the result of my early years as an Abstract-Expressionist painter. I have the greatest faith in intuition and the truth it generates.
My MEANS are the free-hand airbrush with acrylic paint. I chose this combination because it provided a way for me to synthesize my drawing and painting into one act, a direct conduit from subjective cognition to the picture plane.
In addition, having been a studio art teacher for 30 years, I developed a series of five instructional video tapes for HW Productions titled The Artist-in-Residence® Series.
